Metafore Hosts Virtualization Security Training Course

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 15, 2009) - Hartco Inc. (TSX:HCI.UN)

Metafore, one of Canada's largest VMware partners, with over 20 VMware Certified Professionals situated across the country, is hosting a unique 3-day virtualization security training program co-authored and taught by Metafore systems engineer Rob VandenBrink. The course was introduced in Regina, Saskatchewan on April 6, 2009 and will be presented at Metafore's Mississauga offices on April 17, 2009. The course is offered by The SANS Institute (SysAdmin, Audit, Network, Security), the global leader in information security training and certification.

The course, Virtualization Security and Operations, is the first ever to address the many potential security threats and risks associated with virtualization, a rapidly evolving and widely deployed technology that significantly reduces the cost and complexities of managing a multi-server environment. These security vulnerabilities are not inherent to the software itself, but rather are due to the failure or inability to implement and operate the technology without first establishing effective security practices. On completion of the course, participants will have the skills and insights necessary to properly secure their server environments and maintain their desired security and compliance standards.

Securing the VMWare environment

Currently, the Virtualization Security and Operations course focuses on the VMware ESX platform, and is designed for systems, security and network administrators and engineers currently managing a medium- to large VMware environment. Other virtualization platforms, such as VMware ESX v4.0, XEN, and Microsoft Hyper-V, will be included in the next edition of the course in an expanded six-day format.

Training course attracts international attention

This training course was co-authored in late 2008 by Metafore systems engineer Rob VandenBrink in collaboration with Dave Shackleford and Chris Farrow, both from Configuresoft, a provider of server configuration management solutions. Rob also co-authored and taught the security labs at last fall's VMWorld in Las Vegas. He was asked shortly thereafter by the SANS Institute to conduct a workshop on virtualization security and risk assessment at an international SANS event.

A hands-on approach to learning virtualization security

While there is no shortage of theoretical information on virtualization security, gaining practical experience can be a challenge. As Rob VandenBrink explains, this course provides a unique hands-on lab experience. "This course is key in that it talks about real vulnerabilities, demonstrates them on a real platform that many people run, and then goes through how to mitigate them, and we explain it by having the students do it themselves."
