MetaMetrics Partners With Korea's Interpark Books to Provide Lexile Measures for English Titles

Widely Adopted Reading Metric Will Help English Language Learners Find Ability-Appropriate Books

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - Jun 15, 2011) - MetaMetrics®, developer of The Lexile® Framework for Reading, has partnered with Interpark Books to provide Lexile measures for more than fifty thousand English-language titles sold by Korea's leading online book store. The partnership marks the first time Lexile measures will be available for books in the country, providing English-language learners with a valuable tool to match their reading ability with the right texts.

"By providing Lexile measures, we expect to effectively improve English reading ability," said Young-Kyu Seo, Interpark Books CEO. "Being the first book seller in Korea to offer the Lexile measure is very exciting. This will be one of the distinguished services of Interpark Books and provides us the opportunity to make the value of the Lexile Framework, which is still quite new in Korea, known."

Recognized as the most widely adopted reading metric, tens of millions of students worldwide receive a Lexile measure from a reading assessment or program. Lexile measures first became available for Korean students in October 2009 from ETS's TOEFL® test and again in December 2010 from the new TOEFL® Junior™ test. Lexile measures are also available from the Scholastic Reading Inventory and Natmal's soon-to-be-released English-Lectio Quotient (E-LQ).

"MetaMetrics is very proud of this partnership with Interpark Books. The partnership will enable Korean students to select and study independently the books that are best suited for their reading level," said MetaMetrics President Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. "Lexile measures will provide efficient assistance in selecting level-by-level books."

MetaMetrics' partnership with Interpark Books is similar to the deal it signed with Barnes & Noble Booksellers in July 2009. Barnes & Noble allows its customers to search for books by Lexile measure in stores and online.

The Lexile Framework is a unique educational tool that uses a common scale and metric to accurately match readers with text. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework evaluates reading ability and growth based on actual assessments, rather than generalized age or grade levels. Lexile measures help readers select materials within their optimal reading range: 100L below to 50L above their Lexile measure. Reading materials within this Lexile range will challenge the reader's ability, while still maintaining interest and learning. The U.S.-based Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts offer Lexile bands for reading comprehension development by grades to help students prepare for the text demands of college and careers. For more information on the Lexile Framework, visit www.Lexile.com.

The Lexile Framework measures text complexity based on word frequency and sentence length. Once these factors are determined, MetaMetrics uses a proprietary scientific equation to assign a Lexile measure to the text, ranging from below 200L for beginning-reader text to above 1700L for more advanced text. Publishers interested in getting Lexile measures for their materials should contact Jessica Whitesell, publisher relations manager, at jwhitesell@Lexile.com or 919-354-3462.
