Metis Nation of Ontario Lawyer Recognized as one of Canada's 'Most Influential' for Work on Metis Rights

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - August 05, 2014) - Today, Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) President Gary Lipinski congratulated Métis lawyer and MNO citizen Jason Madden for being recognized as one of Canada's 25 most influential lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine.

Jason's recognition, in the human rights category, was based on his ongoing contributions to the recognition of Métis rights and development of Métis law in Canada. Some of his litigation work has included being legal counsel in Métis harvesting rights cases in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta (Laurin & Lemieux, Goodon, Laviolette, Belhumeur, Hirsekorn) as well as being counsel for various Métis governments in all of the cases that have been decided by the Supreme Court of Canada over the last decade that involve Métis legal issues (Powley, Blais, Cunningham, Manitoba Métis Federation).

Jason has also been legal counsel to the MNO for over a decade and has assisted the MNO in many of the successes it has achieved in advancing Métis rights in Ontario, including, the negotiation of the MNO-Ministry of Natural Resources Harvesting Agreement, the MNO-Ontario Framework Agreement as well as the development of the MNO Consultation Framework.

MNO President Lipinski said, "Jason has been involved in the MNO since its early days and his ongoing contributions to the advancement of Métis rights in Canada is beyond compare. We are very proud that one of our own Métis lawyers has been recognized in this way."
