Metro Iowa City's First Chick-fil-A Restaurant Opening April 19 in Coral Ridge Mall

First 100 Adults in Line at New Chick-fil-A Restaurant to Win Free Chick-fil-A for a Year

IOWA CITY, IA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 17, 2007 -- Chick-fil-A, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, will open Iowa City's first Chick-fil-A restaurant on April 19 in Coral Ridge Mall and will celebrate by awarding $26,000 in free Chick-fil-A food to the first 100 adults in line that morning.

A one-year supply of free Chick-fil-A® Combo Meals (52 coupons) will be awarded to each of the first 100 adults, age 18 and older with identification, at the new restaurant at 1451 Coral Ridge Ave. in the mall's food court area. The line can begin forming up to 24 hours prior to the opening outside the mall's entrance near the carousel, with the prizes being given away on April 19 sometime between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. The restaurant will open for breakfast following the awarding of the year supplies, with normal hours of operation from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

"Chick-fil-A's raving fans have turned our grand openings into overnight tailgate parties, often arriving 24 hours in advance with tents, TVs, sleeping bags, games, computers and other gear to spend the night," said Chick-fil-A Inc. President Dan Cathy, son of Chick-fil-A chain founder Truett Cathy.

"When we started the First 100 Fans promotion in 2003, we never could have imagined we'd give away nearly $5 million in free food to raving fans who have camped out in all kinds of weather conditions to win free Chick-fil-A for a year,'' said Cathy, who regularly attends and camps out overnight in the parking lots.

Raving fans are after the original Chick-fil-A boneless breast of chicken sandwich, which Truett Cathy invented in his 24-hour Dwarf Grill® diner near Atlanta in the early 1960s. The sandwich, with its signature pickle slices, became so popular that Cathy opened his first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Atlanta's Greenbriar Mall in 1967. The opening launched Chick-fil-A, which today is the second-largest chicken restaurant chain in the country with more than 1,300 locations in 37 states and Washington, D.C.

Bob Schmidt has been selected as the franchised Operator of the new location and will be transferring from the Chick-fil-A restaurant at Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids, which he operated for nearly 23 years. Schmidt worked as a city manager for six years in Windsor Heights, Iowa and the Town of Washington, Wis. prior to becoming a Chick-fil-A Operator. His wife June is originally from Vinton, Iowa and has been a music teacher at Linn Mar High School for nearly eight years. Their two kids Erich and Katharine worked in their father's Chick-fil-A restaurant while growing up.

"For 40 years, the Chick-fil-A legacy has grown to mean award-winning freshly prepared food and 'my pleasure' customer service," said Schmidt, who is still hiring individuals who want to work in a positive environment with Sundays off. "My team looks forward to continuing that tradition at the Coral Ridge Mall restaurant."

The new restaurant will serve breakfast until 10:30 a.m. with a menu that includes made-from-scratch biscuits served a variety of ways from eggs and cheese to bacon to the popular chicken biscuit. Other items include Chick-fil-A® Chick-n-Minis™, the chain's popular bite-sized Chick-fil-A® Nuggets nestled in a warm mini yeast roll lightly coated with a honey butter spread; Cinnamon Clusters, quarter-sized hash browns, fresh fruit cup and the quick-service industry's first premium line of coffee blends.

Chick-fil-A handles its own menu prep work onsite from filleting and breading the chicken to chopping salads to squeezing lemons for its freshly squeezed lemonade. The lunch and dinner menu includes the original Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich, Chick-fil-A® Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich, Chick-fil-A Nuggets, Chick-fil-A Chick-n-Strips®, Chick-fil-A Cool Wraps™ and a variety of salads and desserts that include handspun milkshakes.

Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy marked several milestones in 2006, including the 60th anniversary of the opening of his first restaurant, the Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Ga. Also, the third generation entered the Chick-fil-A business with two Cathy grandsons becoming restaurant Operators.

$2 Billion In Sales Reached

The chain plans to add more than 90 locations this year, including 70 stand-alone restaurants.
