MHP, Inc. Sends Structural Engineer to Assist Haiti Government

LONG BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - March 4, 2010) -  On Friday, March 5, 2010, MHP, Inc., a local Long Beach, CA structural and seismic engineering firm, is sending one of the firm's Principals to Haiti to assist with the continued response efforts following the disastrous earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010. MHP's Principal Kenneth O'Dell, S.E., is partnering with the Cuningham Group Architects of Santa Monica, ACTS World Relief and Architecture for Humanity in supporting the Haitian Government.

O'Dell will concentrate on both structural and non-structural assessments of occupied and non-occupied structures to ensure the integrity and life-safety capability of structures still standing. Conducting rapid reviews, he will work to determine the viability of current occupancy and assess short term strengthening concepts to help restore standards for continued occupancy. The immediate goal of the reviews will be to re-establish confidence in the structures to allow resumption of business and sheltering functions for the City of Port-au-Prince. MHP will also advise the local agencies on development of future ordinances, code and inspection practices as Haiti moves forward with a rebuilding program.

MHP has over 20 years of experience in structural and seismic risk assessment projects for structures running the full spectrum from high density residential complexes to high rise office buildings. In this work MHP has developed a library of information for 1000's of properties throughout North America used to conduct risk assessments and develop mitigation measures to reduce defined risks. With this background, MHP is positioned as a key resource in the expansion and enhancement of the knowledge base of earthquake performance and risk control for Haiti, North America and other developing countries throughout the Pacific, Pan-American and Asian regions.
