Michigan Campgrounds Offer Memorial Day Traditions

OKEMOS, MI--(Marketwired - May 14, 2014) - As many families begin to make their Memorial Day plans, camping remains a great way to get outdoors and celebrate the unofficial start of summer.

Going on vacation for holidays like Memorial Day doesn't mean campers and RVers can't participate in their favorite traditions, though. Many campgrounds hold celebrations, including parades, concerts and firework displays, for the holiday.

Erica Jones, manager of Poncho's Pond RV Park in Ludington, said her campground, and many others, are already completely booked for the holiday. At Poncho's Pond some special activities planned for the day include a hot dog roast, bicycle parade and bingo for the adults.

"But the most important thing is to remember it's more than just a camping or summer holiday," Jones said. "Memorial Day is about honoring members of the military who gave their lives in service, so we also decorate the park very patriotically."

In addition to celebrating the holiday and enjoying a few days off, campers often use the long weekend as an opportunity to get back into the swing of summer camping, Bill Sheffer, Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds, says.

"Memorial Day weekend is really a kickoff for the summer," he said. "For many, it's their first camping trip and it's an opportunity to check out their recreation vehicles to make sure everything is working fine."
