Michigan Manufacturers Added 18,000 Jobs in Fifth Straight Year of Gains

EVANSTON, IL--(Marketwired - May 09, 2016) - Michigan manufacturing employment climbed for a fifth straight year, reports the 2016 Michigan Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI's database of manufacturers, Michigan gained 17,990 manufacturing jobs from February 2015 to February 2016, a 2.6% increase.

Michigan is now home to 13,797 manufacturers employing 686,470 workers. MNI reports the state has so far added more than 70,000 industrial jobs or 11% since February 2010, ranking among the nation's strongest recoveries from the recession.

"Following the precipitous losses suffered during the recession, Michigan has re-established itself as the center of the auto manufacturing universe. With its abundance of project funding and shovel-ready sites, as well as its skilled labor pool, the state has huge appeal for manufacturers," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "However, a stronger dollar and soft global demand will continue to offset growth."

The industrial machinery and fabricated metals sectors -- second and third in the state for number of jobs -- also posted strong gains. Industrial machinery & equipment rose 2.6% to 130,030 jobs, while employment in the fabricated metals industry climbed 3.6% to 82,646 jobs, reports MNI.

MNI's regional data shows the Southeast region accounted for over half of Michigan's manufacturing gains, adding more than 10,000 jobs, or 2.8% over the year, currently home to 396,817 workers.

Detroit posted a notable gain in manufacturing jobs over the year, reports MNI, growing 1.2%. Detroit currently ranks 3rd in Michigan for industrial employment, accounting for 30,369 workers. Employment in first-ranked Grand Rapids rose 3.1%, and climbed 16% in second-ranked Auburn Hills.
