Michigan State University Selects Kewill for the Classroom

Kewill Transport Prepares Undergraduate Students for Future Careers in Logistics

CHELMSFORD, MA--(Marketwired - Jun 24, 2015) - Kewill, a leading provider of innovative software for supply chain execution, has announced it will continue its partnership with Michigan State University (MSU). The partnership offers MSU students in the Broad College of Business the opportunity to use software they may find in the business world, better preparing them to make an impact immediately. MSU is using Kewill Transport (TMS), part of the Kewill MOVE® on the Cloud for Shippers & Manufacturers platform, multimodal transportation management software designed to accelerate the speed, accuracy and transparency of global logistics and transportation processes for organizations of all sizes.

The Broad College's Supply Chain Management program offers an undergraduate course focused on transportation and operational issues within the context of shipping and logistics. With a section dedicated to the operational issues shippers face and the crucial role third party firms play within this professional space, the Broad College looked to Kewill's TMS solution to help students simulate real-life logistics management. There are nearly 200 MSU students per year learning how and why shipments must be consolidated, how to change the order of stops, and, the importance of gaining full supply chain visibility with the aid of Kewill's technology.

"Being able to demonstrate how professional-grade transportation management software functions brings our discussions to life, and allows the class to participate in exercises that prepare them for what they will face in the field," says Hakan Yildiz, assistant professor in supply chain management in the Broad College of Business, who leads this innovative course. "In fact, many of my students accept jobs in the transportation and logistics industry where knowing how to use supply chain management software, such as Kewill Transport, is a requirement."

Conrad Bartke, an MSU senior in supply chain management says, "The TMS exercise was an awesome opportunity for us to get some hands on experience."

Students learn the benefits of using Kewill TMS, including:

  • The potential to reduce freight costs by 5-15 percent through optimizing route planning, carrier selection and consolidation
  • How automation of shipment tenders, appointment scheduling, and shipment status updates ensure delivery to schedule and on budget
  • The ability to accelerate the transportation invoice processing and payment approvals, leading to improved accuracy, reduced payment cycle times and strengthened carrier relationships
  • Optimization of inbound freight process by collaborating with suppliers

"We are thrilled to be working with Michigan State University on this exciting project," said Walt Heil, VP, Multimodal Transportation Solutions at Kewill. "Preparing for the next wave of logistics innovation starts with the people who make it possible and we are proud to say we have a small part in shaping the future of supply chain execution, starting with students at the undergraduate level. This project is an inspiration to the whole team at Kewill, and we look forward to seeing how it continues to make an impact on our supply chain community."
