Micrel Introduces MICRF507 470 - 510MHz FSK Transceiver for China Short Range Device (SRD) Communications

Low-Cost, Low-Power, +10dBm FSK Transceiver for Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Apps in China

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - March 17, 2010) -  Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions today announced the release of the MICRF507, the latest member of its family of low-cost, low-power, 410 to 950MHz FSK RF Transceivers. The MICRF507 is specifically targeted at the growing market of Automated Meter Reading (AMR) applications that utilize the 470 to 510MHz Short Range Device Communications (SRD) band in China. The device supports data rates up to 200kbps and achieves a sensitivity of -113dBm at 2.4kbps, while only consuming 12mA of supply current from a 2.5V supply. An integrated power amplifier (PA) delivers +10dBm of output power while only consuming 21.5mA of supply current. The MICRF507 is currently available in volume quantities with pricing starting at $1.95 for 1K. Samples can be ordered at http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.

The receiver of the MICRF507 utilizes a Zero IF I/Q architecture, integrating a low-noise amplifier (LNA) with bypass mode, I/Q quadrature mixers, three-pole Sallen-Key IF pre-filters, and six-pole elliptic switched capacitor IF filters, providing excellent selectivity, adjacent channel rejection and blocking performance. FSK demodulation is implemented digitally and a synchronizer recovers the received bit clock. A received signal strength indicator (RSSI) indicates the received signal level over a 50dB range. An integrated Frequency Error Estimator (FEE) and crystal tuning capability allow fine tuning of the RF frequency. The transmitter of the MICRF507 consists of an FSK modulator and power amplifier with output power adjustable from +10dBm to -3.5dBm in seven steps. The device also features a low power down supply current of 0.2μA while retaining register information and a low 280μA in standby mode where only the crystal oscillator is enabled. The MICRF507 requires a 2.0V to 2.5V supply voltage, operates over the -40degC to +85degC temperature range, and is available in a 32-pin MLF® package.
