Micrel Pushes Buttons With MICRF302 RF Remote Control Packet Encoder at APEC '09

Device Consumes Just 230uW of Power While Transmitting a Packet

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - February 16, 2009) - Micrel Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in IC analog, high bandwidth and Ethernet solutions, today announced, as part of the Company's corporate wide 'green product initiative,' that it will be showcasing the industry's newest and most innovative green power analog IC solutions at the annual 2009 APEC (Applied Power Electronics Conference) trade show. As part of the Company's on-going commitment to green, low power solutions, Micrel is rolling out the MICRF302 RF Remote Control Packet Encoder. It offers a low-cost, low-power, microcontroller replacement for remote control applications, such as fan and lighting control, thermostats, home automation, toys, low-tier RKE and garage door openers. The device dramatically reduces power consumption by consuming only 0.5uW in standby mode while awaiting a push-button closure. It is available in volume quantities with pricing starting at $0.54 for 10,000 quantities. Samples can now be ordered on Micrel's web site at: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do

"The RF market continues to expand globally with innovative applications deploying RF technology requiring lower-cost, lower-power, and easier to implement solutions," stated John Lee, director of mixed-signal and RF products, Micrel. "Micrel's new MICRF302 greatly simplifies design time, while dramatically lowering cost, and extending the life of battery powered, remote control applications."

The device supports 1 to 15 push-button switches, and when the contacts between the switches are closed, Manchester encoded packets are generated. These packets are suitable for RF transmission when connected directly to a low-cost RF transmitter such as the MICRF112. The MICRF302 supports data rates from 0.6 to 4.8 kbps and features an 8-bit Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC). Each device is factory programmed with a unique 20-bit serial number, providing over one million unique codes. The MICRF302, along with the MICRF112, operate from a 1.8V to 3.6V power supply thus allowing the remote control transmitter to fully utilize as much of the battery's operating range.
