Micron 95nm 512Mb 6F'2' Mobile SDRAM Recognized as Most Innovative DRAM

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 1, 2006) - Semiconductor Insights (SI), the leader in technical and patent analyses of integrated circuits and electronic systems, today announced that it has awarded Micron's 95nm 512Mb 6F(2) Mobile SDRAM the 2006 INSIGHT Award for Most Innovative DRAM. "Micron's latest 6F(2) Mobile SDRAM builds on the success of its previous generation 6F(2) technology pushing advanced process lithography", stated Geoff MacGillivray, SI's Technology Manager - Memory. "So far, Samsung is the only other identified vendor to venture into the 6F(2) foray with a 110nm component."

6F(2) technology offers many advantages over the 8F2 layout currently implemented by competitors. The 6F(2) cell size reduces array area and thus reduces manufacturing costs, an extremely important attribute in the price sensitive DRAM market. Despite the advantages of 6F(2) technology there are several design challenges, including array architecture, worldine coupling, and sense amplifier layout that has prevented many from pursuing the technology.

"By implementing 6F(2) technology in our mobile memory, Micron is able to offer our clients added performance, lower standby power, and improved reliability into an aggressive form factor. These innovative design methodologies give Micron a competitive advantage in mobile DRAM that is also being implemented in our CellularRam product line."

Recent SI analysis of competing DRAM devices positions Micron favorably in the market. "By using a 95nm process and 6F(2) technology, Micron achieves the smallest cell size of any DRAM device analyzed to date at only 0.054um2", stated MacGillivray. "Other competitors will have to work hard to learn from Micron's previous and current generation 6F(2) solutions to deliver a competitive product."
