Microsoft Will Be Joining Discussions With Leading Jurists, Lawyers and Technical Experts on Legal Issues Related to Advances in the Use of Technology and Digital Information; The Electronic Discovery Institute's Leadership Summit in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on October 17-19, 2012, Is a Unique Opportunity for Thought-Leaders and Decision-Makers From Leading Organizations to Interact, Collaborate and Form Relationships in a Casual Setting

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - August 07, 2012) -  The founders of the non-profit Electronic Discovery Institute ("EDI") announced today that Microsoft Corporation will participate in the 2012 Leadership Summit at the Ritz-Carlton in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from October 17-19, 2012. Attorneys from Microsoft's legal department and developers from product leadership will discuss upcoming developments and how product evolution addresses data management needs for business and litigation.

Microsoft's Director of Information Management and Compliance, Nishan DeSilva, attended the 2011 Summit and was instrumental in influencing EDI to make it an annual event. DeSilva states, "In the era of big data, information governance is becoming more and more important to corporate legal, information technology and records management. Microsoft has always been at the forefront of data issues and is excited to support this and other educational efforts in the legal community."

Joe Banks, Director of Electronic Discovery at Microsoft states, "We believe that broad judicial and public sector participation in the Summit is another huge benefit to the legal community. Microsoft is excited to showcase its new technology and will also provide opportunities for our users to interact with the technology.

EDI President and co-founder Anne Kershaw states, "The Summit panels will reflect EDI's strong ties with the litigation and data management communities. We will present ambassadors from virtually every major business sector in panels that will be dominated by judges, in-house corporate lawyers and IT professionals. We want participants to learn and share what is actually happening with technology in major organizations, what's worked, what hasn't and what's next. Further, we hope to raise the diversity bar by including panels with executive leadership from as broad a pool as possible."

According to Kurt Leeth, EDI's Director of Sponsorship Outreach and Special Events, "The key focus of the Summit is to provide a setting where thought-leaders from large organizations and corporate legal departments can collaborate on the current state of the law pertaining to various uses of digital information. The Summit will include panel and roundtable discussions, breakout sessions and social events intended to facilitate a meaningful dialog about current and future policy pertaining to electronic discovery, digital information privacy, social media and other technology-related matters."

"Unlike most other conferences, the Summit -- hosted by a non-profit -- has one true agenda: education," notes Danielle Nicholson, Director of Event Marketing. Barbara Hanahan, Director of Programs and Communication for EDI, adds "We appreciate Microsoft's dedication to EDI and its commitment to legal education. With marketing and travel budgets being so tight these days, event participants must be very selective about the events they support. We are extremely proud to have Microsoft on our team."

The Electronic Discovery Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational organization. Focused originally on the electronic discovery process in litigation, the Electronic Discovery Institute has expanded its scope to include all technologies and processes that intersect in some way with law. EDI's reports and articles are available for download from EDI's website free of charge.
