Mid-America Services Solutions LLC Expands Membership and Benefits

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - September 27, 2010) -  Confronted by formidable financial pressure from declining reimbursements and admissions, as well as escalating competition and costs, hospitals are seeking new ways to decrease their costs and increase their efficiency. Early in 2009, six hospitals in Kansas and Missouri established the Mid-America Services Solutions LLC, a consolidated service center supported by VHA Inc. To date, they have realized and implemented more than $8.2 million of annualized savings. Energized by their initial success, MSS is now expanding its membership and broadening benefits, reaching other VHA member hospitals.

MSS, a VHA SupplyNetwork™, will admit 10 new members from Kansas and Missouri and anticipates adding additional participants by the end of February 2011. As MSS grows, its leaders expect to reap cost-savings and efficiencies, and to centralize selected supply chain activities under a common shared services model. All MSS members are members of VHA, the national health care network.

"We congratulate the current members and welcome the new members to Mid-America Services Solutions. The savings that MSS has succeeded in achieving are the indisputable results of members' uncompromising efforts to commitment and collaboration," said Taylor White, senior vice president of VHA SupplyNetworks™ at VHA, "and have enabled them to attract more members. Together, these hospitals can achieve more than they could on their own."

Current MSS member-owners are:

  • Cox Health, Springfield, Mo.
  • Freeman Health System, Joplin, Mo.
  • Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan.
  • Saint Luke's Health System, Kansas City, Kan.
  • Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kan.
  • Stormont-Vail Healthcare, Topeka, Kan.

New members are:

  • Barton County Memorial Hospital, Lamar, Mo.
  • Citizens Memorial Hospital, Bolivar, Mo.
  • Geary Community Hospital, Junction City, Kan.
  • Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton, Mo.
  • Hiawatha Community Hospital, Hiawatha, Kan.
  • Labette Health, Parsons, Kan.
  • Liberty Hospital, Liberty, Mo.
  • McCune-Brooks Regional Hospital, Carthage, Mo.
  • Skaggs Regional Medical Center, Branson, Mo.
  • Western Missouri Medical Center, Warrensburg, Mo.

A stand-alone legal entity, MSS has partnered with VHA to provide outsourced supply chain management and contracting services to this group of hospitals to achieve even greater cost efficiencies through consolidated services. Through MSS, the participating hospitals have the opportunity to share centralized logistics and distribution and centralized services for non-traditional services, or to draw on VHA's centralized ordering system, which provides item master management and price management services. For even greater savings for more complex but high dollar areas, members have access to VHA Specialty Services that supports members with physician preference management, purchased services, pharmacy and capital assets. New members, based on their structure and individual objectives, can select some or all of the services offered.

"We attribute the success of our supply network and its ability to maximize member savings directly to our members' high level of commitment and their mutual accountability," said Lyndle Dorrell, administrative manager, materials management at CoxHealth and chairman of the Mid-America Services Solutions Operating Committee.
