Mid-Size IT Operations Implementing Storage Tiering

Automated Tiered Storage to More Than Double in 2006

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- November 22, 2005 -- The population with automated storage tiering will grow from 30% today to 69% in 2006. This result is from a survey of over one hundred IT managers selected among a population of over 2,000 IT users interviewed recently by Peripheral Concepts, Inc. and Coughlin Associates. Over 70% of the respondents were selected to be in the small and medium sites with 1 to 200 TB of disk capacity

"With the rapid growth of servers and database elements, moving different types of data to the lowest-cost storage device possible based on protection, performance, availability and recovery requirements has become a critical need," says Farid Neema, President of Peripheral Concepts.

The survey shows that data retrieve performance and hardware cost savings are the major factors that influence the acquisition of a tiered storage system, while 24% cite compliance with regulations to be the most important factor.

42% of the surveyed population consider a more efficient utilization of storage to be very or extremely important.

Among the greatest pains experienced with their current storage systems, 55% of the respondents cite the inability to use multiple storage vendor equipment, and 50% consider the lack of shared access to Windows, UNIX and Linux data to be detrimental.

A population of two thousand IT sites involving nine major industries was surveyed and questioned on their storage configurations, objectives and plans. For over one hundred sites, this report provides statistics on practices for Tiered Storage, ranks issues and needs, and analyzes trends and plans.

The analysis of this extensive survey will be available by the end of November 2005 in a report titled "Tiered Storage - A User's Perspective." The price of this report is $2,650 with discounts available for multiple reports. It can be ordered at www.periconcepts.com or at www.tomcoughlin.com.
