Midwest Banks, U.S. Bancorp and Huntington Bancshares, Thinking Differently

Several Midwest regional banks continue to make progress through efforts that may be described as conservative aggression. Essentially, these banks are refocusing on more traditional banking practices rather than higher risk markets but are still targeting growth. These efforts should provide increased stability as well as attractive long-term returns. More stringent stress tests slated for early next year may be a concern in a few months but should not affect banks in the short-term.

U.S. Bancorp exemplifies some of the above trends. Its portfolio contains a much smaller percentage of riskier securities than many of its rivals. It remains dedicated to proven practices of increasing deposits and lending activities. The recent acquisition of FSV Payment systems also falls in line with its strategy of expanding the scope of its services without taking on unnecessary risk. Huntington Bancshares is also targeting growth by more secure means. Most recently, the bank detailed its intentions to substantially expand its energy portfolio. It will begin by aiding companies with stakes in shale formations in and around Ohio. The high potential region is attracting lots of competition though, which may make it difficult to capture a large share of the lending business.
