Mike Drummond, Editor-in-Chief of Inventors Digest, Joins American Innovators for Patent Reform Board of Directors

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - August 31, 2009) - Seasoned editor and journalist Mike Drummond has joined the Board of Directors of American Innovators for Patent Reform (AIPR), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and defending American innovation. Mr. Drummond is the editor-in-chief of Inventors Digest Magazine, the longest-running publication serving the invention industry.

Mike Drummond was a 2008 Pulitzer Prize finalist and has won numerous investigative, feature and business-writing awards. His career has included covering natural disasters and national economic issues, and he served two reporting tours in Iraq, including one as bureau chief in Baghdad for the McClatchy Newspapers. He is the author of "Renegades of the Empire" (Random House/Crown Publishers, 2000), the inside story of Microsoft's computer-game and Internet ambitions. His work has appeared in Wired, Salon.com, Fortune, CNET, Business 2.0 and Forrester Research Magazine, among others, and is routinely carried by the Associated Press and Knight Ridder/McClatchy newswires.

Representing inventors, researchers, engineers and patent owners, American Innovators for Patent Reform gives a voice to an important, but under-represented, constituency in the debate over the ways in which the future of American innovation is threatened by the Patent Reform Act of 2009 (Senate bill S. 515 and House bill H.R. 1260) that is currently before Congress. A broad coalition of organizations has come out in opposition to this proposed legislation, which instead of reforming the U.S. Patent system -- by all measures the most successful patent system in the world -- aims to weaken patents. AIPR strongly opposes the Patent Reform Act of 2009.

"Mike Drummond will add more depth to an already distinguished Board of Directors for AIPR," observes Dr. Alexander Poltorak, founder and president of American Innovators for Patent Reform. "As the editor-in-chief of Inventors Digest, Mike is tuned into the inventors who drive innovation in America. We are delighted to welcome Mike Drummond to our Board, and we look forward to working with him to protect American innovation and strengthen the US Patent system."

"This issue is too important for our nation's innovative and economic well-being to sit on the sidelines," Mr. Drummond said. "While I am for improvements to the patent system that would decrease the backlog and elevate the overall quality of granted patents, the legislation as currently written does much more harm than good."

About American Innovators for Patent Reform

Headquartered in New York, American Innovators for Patent Reform (AIPR) represents a broad constituency of American innovators and innovation stakeholders, including inventors, engineers, researchers, entrepreneurs, patent owners, investors, small businesses, and intellectual property professionals such as patent attorneys, patent agents, tech transfer managers and licensing executives.

AIPR opposes the Patent Reform Act of 2009 and its proposed apportionment of damages, post grant opposition and a change to the first-to-file regime. AIPR advocates strengthening the US intellectual property regime and increasing the funding of the US Patent and Trademark Office. AIPR advocates patent reform that creates a multi-tier patent system, synchronizes patent and copyright laws, and clearly strengthens US patents.
