Military Joins Colorado Springs Utilities Lighting Initiative

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO--(Marketwire - April 21, 2009) - AAFES stores on military bases in Colorado Springs are now selling discounted compact fluorescent lamps (CFLS). This partnership is the first of its type in the country and serves as a starting point for military bases everywhere. AAFES is a global retailer with more than 3,100 facilities in some 30 countries.

"The AAFES Ft. Carson PX is excited about the partnership with Colorado Springs Utilities to offer a new rebate program to help promote CFL lights to the Ft. Carson community," said Matthew Beatty, AAFES Ft. Carson PX. "AAFES has increased the marketing of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) to help customers make simple 'Earth Friendly' changes with far reaching impact on the environment."

"We are very proud of our community and excited that the military retailers have joined our lighting efficiency program," said Colorado Springs Utilities CEO, Jerry Forte. "This is certainly a milestone for Colorado Springs Utilities and we hope our partnership serves as a catalyst for similar programs across the country."

The partnership is in addition to OPERATION CHANGE OUT, an ENERGY STAR™ program that supports military bases' shift to CFLs.

So far, 84 military bases around the country have installed 359,268 CFLs in 40,951 housing units. These light bulb change-outs are estimated to:

-- Save over 100 million kilowatt-hours over the life of the bulbs,
representing a substantial reduction in national energy use
-- Cut nearly $11 million in energy costs over the life of the bulbs, and
-- Prevent the emissions of more than 150 million pounds of carbon
    dioxide.
