"Military Women in Need" to Hold Annual Fundraiser for Essential Programs Benefiting Female Veterans and Widows of Veterans

CULVER CITY, CA--(Marketwire - June 15, 2009) - A fundraiser to benefit the public charity Military Women in Need (MWIN) takes place Wednesday, June 24th from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Culver Studios, 9336 Washington Boulevard, Culver City. The event will feature a cocktail reception with a special screening of "In Their Boots," an online documentary series produced by Brave New Foundation. The series reveals the impact the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are having on our military service people and their families at home.

Military Women in Need is a nonprofit organization that provides housing assistance, resource and referral services, and home visits for female veterans and widows of veterans aged 55 or older. Ninety percent of MWIN clients are 65 years or older and most are living on annual incomes of less than $12,000 per year. Military Women In Need empowers these women, who sacrificed for our present freedom, to live their lives with continued independence and dignity. Its programs help prevent homelessness, hunger, elder abuse, and abandonment in Southern California.

In 2008, there were 25 million U.S. military veterans in the United States. However, only 11% of the veterans receiving services from the Veterans Administration were female. MWIN Executive Director Ranlyn Hill attributes that low number to women being more reluctant than their male counterparts to embrace their veteran status as well as the fact that many female veterans and widows of veterans do not understand what services they qualify for and how to apply for services.

Ms. Hill states, "Female veterans are more likely to encounter a burden in the housing market. With our help, they can avoid becoming one of the 35,000 homeless seniors in Southern California."

MWIN is currently facing severe financial cutbacks due to a loss of significant funding. In order to continue serving female veterans, they are seeking support at the levels of sponsorship -- from $150.00 to $1,500.00 -- as well as ticket purchases to the event for $35.00. Tickets to the fundraiser and sponsorship of this event will help sustain MWIN's outreach services to female veterans in Southern California who are living at or below the poverty level.

Tickets to the June 24th fundraiser can be purchased by contacting MWIN or through the Military Women in Need website. For more information, please visit: www.militarywomeninneed.org
