The Mining Association of British Columbia: Mining Industry Welcomes BC Government Energy Plan's Commitment to Competitive Rates and Calls for Industry Participation in Plan Implementation

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 27, 2007) - The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) welcomes the release of the Government of British Columbia's 2007 energy plan "A Vision for Clean Energy Leadership".

"We appreciate that the provincial government recognizes the importance of competitive electricity rates are critical to the industrial development of British Columbia," said MABC President Michael McPhie. "By promising to maintain our competitive advantage in electricity and confirming the Heritage Contract, the government sends a strong positive signal to the mining and smelting industry."

The MABC is also keenly interested in participating in the proposed Industrial Energy Efficiency Program.

"We look forward to consultation with government regarding the development and implementation of this program," added McPhie. "The mining industry has a critical interest in how this program applies to some of the largest electricity consumers in the province."

In reference to the coal provisions of the plan, MABC looks forward to working with the province on the commercialization and application of carbon sequestration and storage technologies.

"We hope the proposed Innovative Clean Energy Fund will be resourced sufficiently to ensure British Columbia leads the world in the development of this technology," concluded McPhie.
