Mining Buddy Builder Online App From Gemcom Allows Users to Create Mining-Specific Avatars for Use in Digital and Social Media

Cartoon Likenesses and Fun Characters Can Be Created for Social Media Profiles, User Forums, Instant Messaging, Mobile Phones, Desktop Wallpaper

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 2, 2010) - Gemcom Software International Inc., the largest global supplier of mining software solutions, today announced the launch of its free Mining Buddy Builder online app which enables people in mining to create their own avatars for social media applications, user forums, instant messaging, mobile phones, computer desktop wallpapers, and other uses in the digital world. The Mining Buddy Builder app – available at www.miningbuddybuilder.com – takes visitors on a fun-filled mini adventure through an underground mine where they can quickly create likenesses of themselves wearing mining, casual, or business apparel along with related accessories. For the really adventurous, the Mining Buddy Builder app can challenge one's creativity with exciting surprises that can lead to a truly unique, out-of-this world avatar.

Social networking sites are playing an increasingly significant role in our personal and professional lives. In a recent Gemcom survey of mining professionals, it was concluded that 82% of respondents use social media both professionally and personally. Of these users, Facebook is used by 73%, LinkedIn by 39%, and Twitter by 26%. On an international level, Facebook reports that it has more than 500 million active users, while Twitter's worldwide user base is consistently reported at well over 100 million.

In mining, an industry facing the many challenges associated with living in a global community, the use of social media and instant messaging tools are becoming common ways of connecting individuals across borders and time zones. The mobility of people in the industry, and the entry of younger, media-savvy individuals, is only accelerating its adoption.

"Like the mining industry, Gemcom employees are spread globally, frequently travelling to visit our customers in over 130 countries around the world. We are finding that our staff and customers are not only using social media and instant messaging tools to stay connected with their friends and families, but also to connect with clients and colleagues," commented Robert Selzler, Gemcom's vice president of marketing. "Soon after launching our own Facebook page, we asked ourselves if there was a fun way we could improve the online identities of people in the mining industry. While there are some apps on the Internet which allow people to create characterizations of themselves, none are as detailed or specific to mining – that's why we developed the Mining Buddy Builder app."

According to Gemcom's survey, only 56% of users upload their actual photo to online profiles. Among the reasons why users would want to use alternative profile images in social media applications, are the loss of control over their photo and simply not wanting to share it with the world. Gemcom's Mining Buddy Builder gives people the flexibility to visually represent themselves, their interests, and even their sense of humour without giving up control over their photos. Mining Buddy avatars can be easily used across multiple social networking and communication tools such as AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, Skype, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and more.

In addition to launching the Mining Buddy Builder app today, Gemcom has also unveiled a new, redesigned website (www.gemcomsoftware.com) full of downloadable resources for the mining industry. Visitors can browse through a selection of webinars and videos covering a wide variety of software-related mining topics ranging from geology, optimisation, planning, scheduling, and more. The new website also includes insightful white papers on numerous exploration and mining subjects, and customer stories that review real-world applications of technology from exploration through mine production management.
