VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - May 16, 2014) - Mining for Miracles, the BC mining community's longstanding fundraising campaign for BC Children's Hospital, raised more than $777,259 on May 15 at its signature event, the 2014 Teck Celebrity Pie Throw. Participants raised funds by volunteering to take a pie in the face while asking friends, family and colleagues to pledge their support.
"Every year, the funds that Mining for Miracles raise have a significant impact on the care children receive at BC Children's Hospital," said Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of BC Children's Hospital Foundation. "The tremendous participation we see in the Teck Celebrity Pie Throw every year is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the mining community's unwavering support for BC's children."
The Pie Throw also featured the 2014 Diamond Draw benefitting BC Children's Hospital. The winner received a 1.01 carat round brilliant-cut diamond, valued at $10,940, donated by De Beers Canada Inc. The 2014 Diamond Draw package, worth over $15,000, includes the diamond, gold and a designer setting donated by De Beers Canada Inc., Teck Resources Limited and Costen Catbalue, respectively.
The Pie Throw and Diamond Draw were supported by hundreds of mining, exploration, development companies, service providers and suppliers across BC, Alberta, Yukon Territories and Northwest Territories, and their employees, family and friends.
Funds raised by Mining for Miracles in 2013 and 2014 will support the BC Children's Hospital BioBank. Biobanking is a new and indispensable research tool that holds the potential to improve treatments and find cures for diseases affecting millions of children around the world. It will be the first institutional pediatric biobank in Canada and will facilitate breakthrough medical discoveries that will improve the lives of children suffering from debilitating and life-limiting diseases.
The partnership between BC Children's Hospital Foundation, the BC Children's Hospital BioBank and Mining for Miracles is a leading example of how industry, institutions and social-profit organizations can work together to provide world-class health care and services to the children and families of BC. Biobanks safely preserve collections of biological samples. Scientists who are members of the bank can seek permission to make a withdrawal from the bank and use the samples for research. In the last 40 years, the survival rate for children with cancer has increased dramatically from 10 per cent to 78 per cent. This advancement is due to extensive research and the development of new treatments. Similar progress has been made with other pediatric diseases. A biobank offers researchers a "ready-to-use" collection of samples that form the basis for their research experiments that will facilitate new breakthroughs in treating childhood diseases.
