Minister Aglukkaq Appoints Chairperson and Vice-Chair to the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 8, 2011) - The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq today announced the appointment of Mary Catherine Lindberg as Chairperson and Dr. Mitchell Levine as Vice-Chair of the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) for five-year terms.

"These appointments ensure that the PMPRB will continue to have the expertise and experience required to meet its mandate," said Minister Aglukkaq. "The appointment of Mary Catherine Lindberg as Chairperson in particular will ensure continuity in the operations of the Board."

Ms. Lindberg has served as Vice-Chair of the PMPRB since June 2006. A former assistant deputy minister in the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, she most recently held the position of executive director of the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario. She has a degree in pharmacy from the University of Saskatchewan and a pharmacist licence in both Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Dr. Mitchell Levine is a professor in the departments of Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He is also director of the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton. Dr. Levine was a member of the PMPRB's Human Drug Advisory Panel. He is the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Levine has a medical degree from the University of Calgary. He studied internal medicine and clinical pharmacology at the University of Toronto and he has an MSc in clinical epidemiology from McMaster University.

The PMPRB is an independent quasi-judicial body established by Parliament under the Patent Act. The role of the Board is to protect consumers and contribute to Canadian health care by ensuring that prices charged by manufacturers of patented medicines are not excessive. It also contributes to informed policy making by reporting on price trends and R&D spending by pharmaceutical patentees.
