Minister Ambrose Appoints Mediators to Help the Canadian Union of Public Employees and Air Canada Reach an Agreement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 17, 2009) - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, has appointed the Honourable James Farley and Mr. Jacques Lessard, Regional Director for Quebec of the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, as mediators to assist Air Canada and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in resolving their outstanding labour issues. Mr. Farley is already working with the parties to address issues related to pensions.

The co-mediators have a deadline of noon on Monday, June 22, 2009, to conclude their efforts. At that time, they may make recommendations for the settlement of any remaining differences between the parties.

"In light of the seriousness of Air Canada's situation, it is in the best interests of both sides to resolve their differences quickly," said Minister Ambrose. "Four of Air Canada's five unions have recently reached tentative agreements with the airline on pension and labour issues, while negotiations with CUPE have not yet reached a successful conclusion. I am hopeful that the parties will be able to arrive at an agreement with the assistance of the two mediators."

Pursuant to section 105 of the Canada Labour Code, the Minister of Labour may appoint mediators to confer with the parties to a dispute or difference and endeavour to assist them in reaching an agreement. In the event that an impasse is reached, the mediators may make recommendations for settlement.
