Minister Ashfield Announces Funding to Help Charities and Protect Canadians

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 11, 2010) - The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway, is pleased to announce contribution funding for seven new projects under the Charities Partnership and Outreach Program of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

"Our government is committed to protecting Canadians and their generosity by helping charities and non-profit organizations develop and deliver compliance-related education and training for the charitable sector," explained Minister Ashfield. "Through the Charities Partnership and Outreach Program, the Canada Revenue Agency is proud to support the invaluable work of registered charities that provide services to communities across Canada."

The CRA will provide almost $3 million in contribution funding for innovative education and training projects that will be carried out before March 31, 2011. These projects were chosen in response to a call for proposals that would:

  • educate charities on compliant fundraising practices
  • educate charities and/or donors about tax shelter donation arrangements and false receipting
  • promote transparency and accountability in the sector

The following organizations submitted successful proposals:

  • Carleton University (Ottawa, Ont.)
  • Community Services Council of Newfoundland and Labrador (St. John's, N.L.
  • Éducaloi (Montréal, Que.)
  • Imagine Canada (Toronto, Ont.)
  • Legal Resource Centre of Alberta Ltd. (Edmonton, Alta.)
  • Ontario Community Support Association (Toronto, Ont.)
  • Université du Québec à Montréal (Montréal, Que)

The Government of Canada supports a regulatory environment where Canadians can donate in confidence, knowing that their donations are going to registered charities that meet their regulatory responsibilities.
