Minister Baird Higlights New Laws That Reflect Canadians' Priorities

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 23, 2011) - The Queen's representative in Canada, Governor General David Johnston, today granted Royal Assent to the following Bills:

  • S-5 (Ensuring Safe Vehicles Imported from Mexico for Canadians Act)

  • S-6 (Serious Time for the Most Serious Crime Act)

  • C-14 (Fairness at the Pumps Act)

  • C-21 (Standing up for Victims of White Collar Crime Act)

  • C-22 (Protecting Children from Online Sexual Exploitation Act)

  • C-30 (Response to the Supreme Court of Canada Decision in R. v. Shoker Act)

  • C-35 (Cracking Down on Crooked Consultants Act)

  • C-42 (Strengthening Aviation Security Act)

  • C-48 (Protecting Canadians by Ending Sentence Discounts for Multiple Murders Act)

These are important new laws that will help the economy and help make Canadian communities safer

"I am proud that our government has been able to advance our legislative agenda," said the Hon. John Baird, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.

"But there is still much to do," Minister Baird added. "Whether it's passing the excellent budget Minister Flaherty presented yesterday or other important initiatives still before us, Canadians expect us to do our jobs and make Parliament work."

"An election would kill important bills" said Minister Baird. It would jeopardize measures to strengthen the economy, enhance our democratic process, put the rights of victims before criminals and ensure the safety and security of our communities.

Minister Baird then urged the Opposition to work with the government to adopt our Bills instead of forcing an unwanted and unnecessary election.
