Minister Blackburn Addresses Delegates at 50th ANAVETS Dominion Convention

STRATFORD, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), today spoke before 350 delegates during the business session of The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS) 50th Biennial Command Convention which is currently being held in Stratford.

"The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada has a proud history of advocating for the men and women who have served our country and defended the freedoms we enjoy today. Your efforts have helped ensure that we will never forget their achievements and sacrifices, and we will continue to remind future generations of this," said Minister Blackburn.

In his speech, the Minister provided delegates with an update on programs and services for Veterans and emphasized recent announcements that aim to improve support to Veterans and their families. The proposed changes will improve financial support for those who are seriously injured in the line of duty; and make sure injured Veterans have an adequate monthly income by enhancing the earnings loss benefit.

Minister Blackburn also updated convention delegates on progress made on other key priorities he set this year such as reducing the length of time it takes to process disability applications, as well as improving service to Veterans and their families.

Minister Blackburn commended the representatives of ANAVETS for their work in making sure Canada's Veterans are treated with the dignity and respect they have earned. "As an organization, ANAVETS is a valued partner in ensuring Canada's Veterans have the honour and support they so rightly deserve," added the Minister.

Please note that the convention runs from October 3-6.
