Minister Blackburn Announces Funding to Restore Local Tribute to Veterans in Manitoba

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 24, 2011) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and James Bezan, MP for Selkirk—Interlake, announced today up to $1,720 in federal government support for a project in Selkirk, Manitoba to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"It is our sacred duty to remember and honour the brave men and women in uniform who serve Canada so selflessly. Our Veterans have fought for our freedoms and these cenotaphs are symbols of their accomplishments," said Minister Blackburn. "It is gratifying to know that younger generations have special places like these to reflect on our country's history."

The City of Selkirk will receive funding to restore the cenotaph located in the Veterans Memorial Park. This memorial is dedicated to the local war dead and Veterans of the First and Second World Wars.

Planned restoration work includes removing the concrete and asphalt around the base and replacing it with new concrete as well as repairing any visible chips.

"Remembering local Veterans is an important part of community life in cities and towns across Manitoba," said MP James Bezan. "This contribution will help ensure that the cenotaph in Selkirk remains a testament to the service and sacrifice of local Veterans for years to come."

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding through this program or through the new Community War Memorial Program that provides funding to build new memorials or to make additions to existing ones.
