Minister Blackburn Announces Funding to Restore Local Tribute to Veterans in Ontario

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 4, 2011) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), and Gord Brown, MP for Leeds—Grenville, announced today up to $4,080 in federal government support for a project in North Augusta, Ontario to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"It is our sacred duty to remember and honour the brave men and women in uniform who serve Canada so selflessly. Our Veterans have fought for our freedoms and these cenotaphs are symbols of their accomplishments," said Minister Blackburn. "It is gratifying to know that younger generations have special places like these to reflect on our country's history."

The Township of North Augusta will receive funding to restore the North Augusta Cenotaph. The memorial is dedicated to those from the area who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars.

Planned restoration work includes cleaning and restoring the granite structure and marble soldier. The names on the monument will be removed and re-engraved and the grassed area surrounding the cenotaph in the parkland will be filled with white stone.

"Canada is blessed with many beautiful memorials and the North Augusta Cenotaph is no exception, holding a very special meaning to many in the community," said MP Gord Brown. "This funding will provide continued opportunities for the community to join together in celebration of the achievements and sacrifices of Canada's Veterans and war dead."

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding through this program or through the new Community War Memorial Program that provides funding to build new memorials or to make additions to existing ones.
