Minister Blackburn Inaugurates a New Veterans Affairs Canada Point of Service at Canadian Forces Base Bagotville

BAGOTVILLE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Nov. 19, 2010) - Today, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), along with Colonel Alain Pelletier, Commander of 3 Wing, officially opened a new Veterans Affairs Canada point of service at CFB Bagotville. This new point of service will allow Veterans from the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, members of the Canadian Forces and their families to have access to information and services on site.

"As of today, two full-time Department employees will be on site and a third employee will be added shortly," said Minister Blackburn. "They are available and ready to help each traditional or modern-day Veteran and their family members in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean area. This means better support, faster access to information and benefits and client services designed to better meet your needs."

Over the last few years, we have noticed an increase in the number of traditional and modern-day Veterans benefitting from the services offered by the Department. In the Quebec area, which includes Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, the number of former Canadian Forces members, also known as modern-day Veterans, has gone up by more than 300 in one year. To meet demand, the new point of service will rely on a case manager and two client service agents supported by the Sainte-Foy/Valcartier Veterans Affairs Canada District Office.

"The establishment of a permanent and expanded Veterans Affairs Canada service point in Bagotville will better serve the Veterans in our care, including those in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Chibougamau and Côte-Nord areas. This service will integrate with our existing services for our military and their families to facilitate the transition of our members to civilian life," said Colonel Pelletier, commander of the 3rd Wing.

The Minister was accompanied by representatives from the local Royal Canadian Legion branches, members of Veterans UN-NATO Canada and serving members and staff from 3 Wing. The point of service is located in Building 60, room 225 at CFB Bagotville.
