Minister Blackburn Invites Young Farmers to the National Future Farmers Network

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 18, 2010) - Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture) Jean-Pierre Blackburn, announced today the dates of the National Future Farmers Network, which will be convened in Ottawa on November 15 and 16, 2010. This national network, which will be a first for young farmers, will bring together some 45 participants who will be joined by observers from agricultural organizations, as well as federal and provincial governments.

"Agriculture is a sector of the future, which is one of the reasons why we're going to have to help our young farmers access it," said Minister Blackburn. "The National Future Farmers Network will provide an ideal forum for Canada's young farmers to discuss their concerns and the challenges facing them and to further explore the complexity of the issues of young farmers."

This Network is a follow-up to the results of the roundtables that the Minister held in 2009 and his promise to further develop a "youth lens" in the development of policies and programs.

"The National Future Farmers Network will provide young farmers from across Canada with the opportunity to discuss with representatives from industry and federal and provincial governments the concerns, challenges and opportunities they face daily. We commend Minister Blackburn for the work he has done on the young farmer file and look forward to a constructive dialogue," said Ian Richardson, President of the Canadian Young Farmers' Forum.

"Young farmers surely have a say in the way their future will be built, which is why we are offering them this chance at the National Future Farmers Network, where they will not only be passive observers, but fully-active actors in their future. Together, we can redesign the tools that we have to stimulate renewal in the agriculture sector", stated Minister Blackburn.
