Minister Blackburn Thanks the Members of the Canadian Payroll Association

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 14, 2009) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture and Agri-Food), and Patrick Culhane, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Payroll Association (CPA), are acknowledging their longstanding cooperation and ongoing support for the Canadian employers and payroll professionals as part of the National Payroll Week, starting on September 14.

"The outstanding relationship that the Canadian Payroll Association and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have developed over the years clearly demonstrates the commitment and ability of our two organizations to make positive changes when it comes to payroll," said Minister Blackburn. "I would like to take this opportunity to praise the Association, payroll professionals and payroll community and their role in assisting the CRA to help employers meet their remitting and filing requirements and reduce the administrative burden," added the Minister.

The CRA works closely with the CPA to promote voluntary compliance with employer obligations for withholding, remitting and reporting; to address the payroll community's concerns; to communicate and implement legislative and administrative changes as efficiently and effectively as possible; and to improve the working environment of employers by eliminating administrative inefficiencies affecting payroll.

"This relationship supports the development of more effective and efficient legislative requirements for employers and government," stated Patrick Culhane. "We look forward to continuing to work with the CRA on behalf of employers by building on such past accomplishments as system improvements, taxable benefit changes and regulatory reforms resulting in administrative and paper burden reductions," added Mr. Culhane.

In Canada, approximately 1.5 million employers annually pay some $200 billion in remittances to the CRA. Payroll administrators prepare about 25 million T4 information slips, 8 million Statements of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and other Income (T4As), and 6 million slips reporting Employment and Other Income (RL-1) to Revenue Quebec.
