Minister Blackburn Welcomes 45 Young and Beginning Farmers From Across Canada to the First National Future Farmers Network

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2010) - Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), was very pleased to announce that all is in readiness to welcome participants to the first National Future Farmers Network, to be held in the National Capital Region on Monday, November 15 and Tuesday, November 16, 2010.

The National Future Farmers Network will bring together approximately 45 participants from across Canada representing a broad range of farming activities, as well as observers from producer organizations, young farmers' associations, and various federal and provincial government departments' representatives.

"Farming is definitely a forward-looking business, as well as one of the pillars of our economy, and we must do everything we can to help our young farmers get established in agriculture," said Minister Blackburn. "For young farmers, the National Future Farmers Network will be an ideal forum to discuss their concerns and challenges, deepen their exploration of the complex issues facing young and beginning farmers, and identify approaches for addressing these concerns and meeting these challenges, thus ensuring that farming survives."

This Network is a result of the roundtables held by the Minister in 2009 and his promise to further develop a "young farmers lens" in developing policies and programs.

"Young people most certainly have input to contribute to the directions that will shape their future; so we give them the opportunity to do that by holding the National Future Farmers Network, where they will not be just passive observers but fully-committed participants. In this way, together we can reinvent the tools we have and ensure renewal in the agriculture sector," concluded Minister Blackburn.
