Minister Blaney Applauds Law Enforcement on International Child Exploitation Arrests and Minister MacKay Highlights Tough New Legislation That Combats Child Offences and Predators

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 14, 2013) - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness today commended members of a joint police operation which resulted in the rescue of more than 380 children and arrest of more than 300 individuals.

"I congratulate those who contributed to the success of this operation including the Toronto Police Service and Royal Canadian Mounted Police's National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre. My thanks go out to the many international law enforcement agencies involved in the arrest of individuals suspected of having committed heinous crimes against children.

"Our Government is committed to working with our national and international partners to protect our most vulnerable citizens from this abhorrent act," said Minister Blaney.

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada added, "While I cannot comment on this specific case, our Government is deeply committed to strengthening the justice system to ensure that sexual offenders who prey on children are punished to the full extent of the law.

We will build on our record of bringing forward measures to better protect our children, which includes raising the age of consent, ending 2 for 1 sentencing credits, ending the use of house arrest for these horrific crimes and making the reporting of child pornography mandatory for Internet Service Providers.

Nothing is more reprehensible than harming a child. The devastating effects of abuse on children often last a lifetime."
