Minister Blaney visits RCMP "H" Division, joins officer in ride-along

DARTMOUTH, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 21, 2014) - Public Safety Canada

The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, was in Dartmouth today to visit RCMP "H" Division members and employees, and to meet with Chief Superintendent Brian Brennan, Commanding Officer of "H" Division. He also joined an RCMP officer on a ride-along for first-hand experience of a typical officer's shift.

Since taking on the role of Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Minister Blaney has been taking the opportunity to see for himself what police officers' training and duties entail. In March of this year, he visited the RCMP Academy, "Depot" Division, where RCMP cadets take the Cadet Training Program, an extensive 24-week basic training course for new recruits. In April, Minister Blaney joined Vancouver Police Department Chief Chu and officers on a tour of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, an area well known for drug use and other criminal activity. Today's ride-along highlighted the urban and rural policing environments in Nova Scotia with RCMP's "H" Division. Over the course of the summer, the Minister has been meeting with stakeholders to discuss the Government's action to counter crime and keep Canadians safe.

"The RCMP has an important role in ensuring the safety and security of our communities. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to meet with Chief Superintendent Brennan and officers today and to join them during their regular shift. It has been valuable for me to gain a deeper understanding of the work they do in keeping our communities safe and crime-free."

- Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness
