Minister Clement Announces $1 Million to Stimulate Economic Growth in Timmins

TIMMINS, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 19, 2010) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced a FedNor investment of $1,000,000 in an information and communications technology project to provide a comprehensive geographic information system for the Timmins region.

"The Government of Canada's investment today is just one example of how we are helping communities in Northeastern Ontario to increase tourism activity, stimulate local economic activity and create jobs," said Minister Clement. "Everyone benefits from the regional approach because it is cost effective, promotes the sharing of information and best practices, and builds technical capacity within our communities."

The City of Timmins along with 17 area communities and a planning board will use the FedNor funding to improve access to and the sharing of municipal information, such as land data, commercial development areas, recreational locations, tourism attractions and community infrastructure, which may be accessed by businesses, organizations and the public.

"We're very excited about the positive impact FedNor funding will have on Timmins and the region," said Tom Laughren, Mayor of Timmins. "Today's announcement will lead to increased business activity in our region thanks to support from the Government of Canada."

By supporting community economic development and business growth through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
