Minister Clement Announces Expansion of Open Data Portal

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 28, 2012) - The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced the recent addition of more than 1,000 data sets to the Open Data Portal at www.data.gc.ca.

"The release of these additional datasets will help spur innovation. The information in these data sets provides Canadian entrepreneurs with business opportunities that will benefit them and all Canadians," said Minister Clement.

These recent data sets come from four federal government organizations. Notably, the Treasury Board Secretariat is making available data on authorities and expenditures from departments and agencies for 2012-2013, tables from the 2011-2012 Main Estimates, and data from the 2008 and 2011 Public Service Employee surveys.

Statistics Canada has made its community-level health profiles available, as well as 2001 and 2006 census records, and age and gender data from the 2011 Census.

Environment Canada has made available fish stocks and freshwater quality indicator data from the Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators program.

The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency is now participating in this project, and has provided data about projects that have been approved by the Agency since 1995.

The Open Data Portal now has more than 273,000 datasets from 21 participating organizations. It is a one-stop shop for federal government data that can be downloaded free of charge by Canadian citizens, researchers, voluntary organizations and private sector businesses. Application developers can reuse and mashup this data for commercial purposes, research or community services for the benefit of all Canadians.
