Minister Clement Attends International Open Government Partnership

BRASILIA, BRAZIL--(Marketwire - April 17, 2012) - The Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, has arrived in Brasilia, Brazil, to take part in the International Open Government Partnership's Annual Meeting and present Canada's Open Government Action Plan. He will also endorse the Partnership's declaration of principles, as a final step toward Canada's membership in the Partnership.

Canada's Open Government Action Plan was released to Canadians on April 11, 2012. It builds on the three streams of Canada's Open Government strategy: Open Data, Open Information and Open Dialogue, and on achievements already realized.

"These three streams address three "grand challenges" as defined by the Open Government Partnership: improving public services, more effectively managing public resources, and increasing public integrity. The commitments in the Action Plan provide Canada's response to these challenges," said Minister Clement.

Delegates from 53 countries are attending the meeting in Brasilia. Attending countries will present their action plans with the goal of achieving greater openness, sharing knowledge and helping to solve practical problems.

Canada's Action Plan was informed through consultations with citizens, the private sector, civil society and other levels of government. Minister Clement also created an Advisory Panel on Open Government to help shape Canada's Open Government Action Plan and commitments.

During this annual meeting, Minister Clement will meet with ministerial counterparts from other countries, present Canada's Action Plan and attend sessions.

The Action Plan is available at www.open.gc.ca.
