Minister Clement Welcomes Extension of Historic Partnership with European Space Agency

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 15, 2010) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, issued the following statement on the occasion of the signing of the extension of Canada's historic 30-year Cooperation Agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) today in Paris, France:

"Over the past 30 years, we have worked hard with our European partners to advance space exploration. This agreement will allow us to further strengthen our collaboration and push the frontiers of knowledge and discovery through space science.

"As Prime Minister Harper has said before, science powers commerce. This agreement will also help drive industrial partnerships that will contribute to technology innovation and commercialization.

"The extension of Canada's formal partnership with ESA is strategically important for delivering the Canadian Space Program. It gives our industry and scientists access to existing and potential European partners, providing them with opportunities to develop their expertise and demonstrate their capabilities.

"This agreement will foster key partnerships between Canadian and European industries, which will increase competitiveness and open new markets for our renowned space industry. Canada's collaboration with ESA provides critical data, science and technologies that support both our quest for scientific knowledge and our operational needs.

"I am very pleased to be commemorating the extension of our cooperation agreement with Europe. This is a partnership that will continue to bring key benefits to Canada by putting our space industry on the world stage and showcasing Canadian technology and innovation."
