Minister Day Announces Independent Investigation Into RCMP Pension Allegations

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 29, 2007) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced that Canada's New Government will launch immediately a full, independent investigation into allegations made before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts, related to the administration of the RCMP pension plan.

"I am seriously concerned with the information that was presented yesterday at the Public Accounts Committee," said Minister Day. "The abuses in question took place from 2000 to 2005. Canada's New Government believes that managers, at all levels, should be held accountable. Unfortunately, the previous Government failed to take adequate steps to investigate these matters," he added.

An individual will be appointed immediately who will act independently in leading this investigation. This individual, who will be supported by experts, will report to the President of the Treasury Board and the Minister of Public Safety within eight to 12 weeks.

This individual will have the authority:

(a) to make such examination of all records and such investigations as he deems necessary;

(b) to engage the services of any experts that he deems necessary to complete the investigation, including, but not limited to forensic auditors.

"Today we are taking action by launching an independent investigation to determine once and for all what actually happened," commented Minister Day. "As there are no national security issues involved, this will result in a full, public report."

Canada's New Government is committed to a high standard of transparency and accountability and continues to take action to ensure government business is conducted in a responsible manner.
