Minister Day Visits Saudi Arabia

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA, --(Marketwire - March 26, 2008) - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, visited Saudi Arabia on March 25-26. During his visit, he met with Saudi Deputy Minister of Interior, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, and the Head of General Intelligence Presidency, Prince Muqrin bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.

"I was pleased to meet with Prince Mohammed and Prince Muqrin to discuss security-related matters of mutual concern. During my discussions with Prince Muqrin, I raised the consular case of Mr. Mohamed Kohail. I reiterated the Canadian Government's position that a review of the decision made by the Saudi judiciary be carried out with a view to ensuring a full and fair hearing. We urge Saudi authorities to overturn the death sentence." said Minister Day.

"There is a review process in similar cases within the judicial framework of Saudi Arabia's justice system. We are closely monitoring the situation and further to the representations that Minister Bernier and I have made, we are expecting a review of this case. However, for privacy reasons, the specifics of this case cannot be discussed."

"Canada will continue to pursue all avenues to assist Mr. Kohail," said the Honourable Maxime Bernier, Minister of Foreign Affairs. "Canadian consular officials are in regular contact with the Kohail family and their legal counsel as they explore all available legal options."

Minister Day is visiting the Middle East to meet with his counterparts and discuss a variety of security and public safety issues. As part of the visit, he has travelled to Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan. Minister Day will next be going to Egypt.

This Middle East visit is part of the Government of Canada's ongoing efforts to build and maintain relationships with its international partners on global security and public safety priorities.
