Minister Diane Finley Pays Tribute to Veterans and Members of the Canadian Forces

SIMCOE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2011) - On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today honoured Canada's Veterans, Canadian Forces members and their families at the 49th Warriors' Day ceremony, which took place during the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show.

"Our Government is committed to honouring both our Veterans and our service men and women who are still proudly defending Canadian values around the world," said Minister Blaney. "We must do everything we can to keep the torch of remembrance alive. Today's ceremony in Simcoe helped to remind us of how thankful we are for our Veterans who accomplished so much in the defence of peace, freedom, and democracy."

Minister Finley and other dignitaries spoke to a large crowd during the event that included a traditional remembrance ceremony and musical performances by the Ingersoll Pipe Band.

"The Warriors' Day ceremony is an important Canadian tradition that honours our Veterans and the brave men and women who continue to serve today," said Minister Finley. "On behalf of our Government, I applaud the Warriors' Day Committee for their hard work in making this special event possible. Because of their dedication, our community can come together to remember the important contributions of our Veterans."

The Warriors' Day ceremony is an annual opportunity for the citizens of Norfolk County and its surrounding communities to honour past and present members of the Canadian Forces and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The guest speaker for this year's event was Second World War Veteran and flying officer, Mr. Ike Hewitt.
