Minister Duncan Announces Plans to Remember the Legacy of Indian Residential Schools on Parliament Hill

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 27, 2011) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development today announced that the Government of Canada will commemorate the legacy of Indian Residential Schools through a permanent installation of stained glass artwork in Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

"I would like to thank the Honourable Andrew Scheer, Speaker of the House of Commons, for his collaboration on this project," stated Minister Duncan. "The stained glass artwork will honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis children who attended Indian Residential Schools and their families and communities who were profoundly impacted by the schools' legacy."

On June 11, 2008, Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologized on behalf of Canadians to former students of Indian Residential Schools and all Aboriginal people for this sad chapter in Canadian history. Canadians witnessed as the Prime Minister acknowledged the abuse experienced by many who attended Indian Residential Schools and the impact this system had on Aboriginal people, languages and culture.

Minister Duncan asked Speaker Scheer for the collaboration of the House of Commons to create a permanent commemoration of the legacy of Indian Residential Schools so that Parliamentarians, and visitors for generations to come, will have the opportunity to learn about the history of Indian Residential Schools and Canada's reconciliation efforts. A panel of art experts will be established to recommend an Aboriginal artist who will design the stained glass artwork.
