Minister Duncan Announces Support for Kashechewan First Nation Housing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 16, 2011) - The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, is pleased to announce that the Government of Canada and the Kashechewan First Nation have taken an important and collaborative step in implementing a 2007 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Agreement.

The Government of Canada will provide a total of $3.25 million over two years as part of an ongoing commitment to implement the MOU signed in 2007 between the First Nation and the Government of Canada. The Kashechewan First Nation is working according to a plan, which includes housing.

This federal investment builds upon the MOU to redevelop a healthy and sustainable community in its present location. Kashechewan First Nation is an isolated Cree community located approximately 420 kilometres north of Timmins, Ontario, near the west coast of James Bay.

"This investment will allow the Kashechewan First Nation to make strides in addressing their housing shortage," said Minister Duncan. "This collaborative step shows that working together is delivering important results for the people of Kashechewan."

"We are glad to be moving forward and making progress on the Memorandum of Understanding we signed with Canada," said Chief Jonathan Solomon. "This investment will allow skilled tradesmen from our community to build quality homes for the people who need them."

The Government of Canada is taking action to improve the lives of First Nations, stimulate economic growth and create jobs in First Nation communities through targeted infrastructure investments. Investments in housing projects help ensure First Nation people living on reserve have access to accessible and safe housing.
