Minister Finley Salutes SMEs During Small Business Week

GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Oct. 23, 2013) - The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, is pleased to celebrate small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Canada during Small Business Week.

"SMEs represent more than 99 per cent of businesses in Canada, and they employ two thirds of the workforce in the private sector," said Minister Finley. "Since 2009, Canada has seen over 900,000 net new jobs created-the best job growth record in the G7-and Canadian entrepreneurs are the main reason that we are achieving these results."

The Office of Small and Medium Enterprises (OSME), a division of Public Works and Government Services Canada, was created in 2005 to advocate on behalf of SMEs. Since then, as part of its mandate, OSME has been actively engaging potential suppliers, especially during Small Business Week, to increase participation of SMEs in federal government procurement and help them to understand how they can do business with the government.

Another important way that the Government is supporting entrepreneurs is through the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP). BCIP became a permanent program in 2012, and this fall, the Government will be adding a new military procurement component.

"I'm very pleased that our Government is helping Canadian companies to innovate and commercialize new products through the Build in Canada Innovation Program," added Minister Finley. "The first sale to the Government of Canada is an important step-we know that-because it brings Canadian businesses one step closer to moving their innovations into domestic and indeed international markets."

Businesses across the country that have questions about government procurement can attend a free OSME seminar or request a one-on-one briefing. Over 42,000 suppliers have already attended OSME seminars. They can also get in touch with OSME through its InfoLine at 1-800-811-1148 or visit canadabusiness.ca for more information on how to sell their goods and services to all levels of government. They can also visit Buyandsell.gc.ca, where they can find a calendar of upcoming events and the OSME location nearest to them.
