OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jan. 14, 2016) - Congratulations to the Canadians in contention for an Oscar! The Government of Canada is very proud of the artists and the works that represent our country at this awards ceremony, which is one of the film industry's most prestigious. Our artists and creators are among the most talented and imaginative in the world. They are excellent ambassadors for Canada, as they communicate our unique identity to the rest of the world.
The nominations for the 88th Oscars were announced this morning by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.
Canada's audiovisual industry helps our culture develop and is an important sector of our economy. In 2013-14, the total volume of film and television production that took place in Canada reached $5.9 billion-of which $2.7 billion was in Canadian-only production. The Government of Canada is proud to invest more than $660 million in the industry each year through Telefilm Canada, the National Film Board of Canada, the Canada Media Fund and tax credit programs.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage, and on behalf of all Canadians, I wish the best of luck to all our representatives. We are proud of you and of what you symbolize for Canada's arts and culture community.
