Minister Kenney Issues Statement Recognizing Holi

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 11, 2009) - The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing the Hindu festival of Holi.

"Holi is a spring festival that has been celebrated for hundreds of years, marking the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

"For Hindus around the world, Holi is a time to come together with family, friends and the community to share gifts and meals.

"In Canada, the festival is celebrated by Hindus and non-Hindus alike. Holi aims to break down barriers and allow diverse sections of society to celebrate together in a spirit of brotherhood. This celebration can truly serve to strengthen our country.

"The most striking feature of the festival is the use of coloured paints and powders, applied to oneself and tossed onto others in the joyful spirit of the day.

"For all Canadians, Holi provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Hindus have made to this country's rich and diverse heritage.

"As Prime Minister Harper has said, 'Pluralism is the principle that binds our diverse peoples together.'

"As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I hope that everyone has a colourful and happy Holi."
