Minister Kenney Issues Statement Recognizing the Celebration of Buddha's Birthday

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 21, 2010) - The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing the celebration of Buddha's birthday:

"For Buddhists of the Theravada tradition in Canada and around the world, today is one of the holiest and most joyful observances of the year.

"It is a time to commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Siddhārtha Gautama – the Buddha. It is also a time for Buddhists to reaffirm their commitment to ponder and practice the Buddha's teachings.

"Some Buddhists refer to this day as Vesak, while others celebrate it as Buddha's Birthday, or simply Buddha Day.

"In Canada, Buddha's Birthday is celebrated by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Official observances at temples are the focal point of the day's celebrations. In many places across the country, festivities also include community gatherings for the enjoyment of music and dancing and the sharing of communal vegetarian meals.

"For all Canadians, this important day provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Buddhists have made to this country's rich and diverse heritage.

"As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes for a happy holiday to all those celebrating today."
