Minister Lebel to Explore Market Development Opportunities for Quebec Wood Products in Europe

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, will embark Monday on a European tour that will take him to France and Italy where he will meet with various wood industry stakeholders.

Building on the Government of Canada's support for the forest sector and communities that have been affected by the downturn in the economy, the Minister will explore development opportunities for Quebec businesses in the French and Italian wood markets.

"Canada's economic relationships with France and Italy are significant and diversified. This tour will support many Quebec and Canadian enterprises in their business development and investment efforts. It will also be an opportunity to explore new approaches to regional economic development," said the Minister.

"It is critical that the industry be able to sell its products in new markets," said Mr. Lebel, who pointed out that 50% of softwood lumber is exported and that almost all of this is to the United States.

The Minister will, among other things, be meeting with members of the French and Italian governments as well as representatives of various regional economic development authorities.

Minister Lebel also mentioned that announcements would be made during this official trip.

The tour as a whole will be an opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the industry and communities, as well as new alternatives such as biomass harvesting and new wood construction methods.
