Minister MacKay Announces Investment in Emergency Communications Equipment

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2011) - Today, on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Canada's Public Safety Minister, the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Central Nova, announced $30,000 for emergency communications equipment for the Town of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, under the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP).

"Our government knows how important new emergency management equipment is to modern police work," said Minister MacKay. "By funding communications equipment for emergency responders in Pictou County, our government is ensuring we have the tools needed to help keep our communities and our neighbours safe."

Emergency management from prevention and mitigation to response and recovery is a shared responsibility. Government, at all levels, as well as first responders work in partnership to protect public safety.

Public Safety Canada's JEPP program supports emergency preparedness projects, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and critical infrastructure initiatives across Canada. JEPP funding allows for the purchase of emergency response equipment such as:

  • radios and other telecommunications equipment;
  • emergency generators;
  • protective or sensing equipment for hazardous materials; and,
  • thermal imaging cameras and other search and rescue equipment.
