Minister MacKay Congratulates Les Voltigeurs de Quebec on their 150th Anniversary

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 6, 2012) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement on the 150th Anniversary of Les Voltigeurs de Québec:

"On March 7, 2012, Les Voltigeurs de Québec celebrate their 150th anniversary. As Minister of National Defence I am pleased to recognize the remarkable contribution of this regiment to Canada's proud military history. This momentous anniversary gives all Canadians an opportunity to reflect on the significance of one of Canada's oldest regiments, whose history dates back to before Confederation.

In 1862 Canada's first French-speaking regiment, Les Voltigeurs de Québec, was founded, and since that time they have continually distinguished themselves in theatres of operations around the globe. On the battlefields of France during the Great War, during the devastating conflicts of the Second World War, in peace keeping operations, and most recently, on operations in Afghanistan and in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake that devastated the island nation, these exemplary men and women have always answered the call of duty and have made Canada and all Canadians proud.

Today, and throughout the year of their 150th Anniversary we congratulate all members of Les Voltigeurs de Québec past and present, and we remember their contribution and sacrifice and that made by all the men and women of the Canadian Forces in the defence of Canadian values at home and abroad."
